ASSOCIATE MUSIC DIRECTOR
Scope of Position (10 hrs/week)

The Associate Music Director supports the faith of the congregation through the ministry of music. The position has five main components: 1) accompanying the Sanctuary Choir and congregation in their singing, 2) accompanying Sunday worship hymns as the pianist/organist, 3) directing the Carillon Bell Choir and the Hallelujah Ringers Youth Bell Choir, and 4) conducting the Atonement Orchestra quarterly with two rehearsals prior 5) shared responsibility in playing preludes and postludes as needed in worship.

The ability to play the organ is required along with the ability to choose music that is appropriate for worship in each liturgical season.

This role requires ministry leadership and works in close cooperation with the Pastors, Music Director, and Worship Ministry Team in providing leadership and planning for worship and music in the church. This role should also be filled by an individual who supports our church vision to be a welcoming and inclusive Christian community, fostering connection to God, one another, and the world and supports the idea that God’s radically inclusive love excludes no one.

The Pianist/Organist is responsible for:

  1. Leading congregational singing (liturgical and hymn) during worship services. Some liturgies require organ accompaniment; some require piano.

  2. Accompanying the choirs in regular Sunday services (9:30 a.m.) and in rehearsals each Wednesday (7:15-8:30 p.m.), late August through May.

  3. Alternating with the Music Director in playing preludes, postludes and offertories for worship services when such music is not otherwise provided.

  4. Selecting service music and hymn settings from the broad repertoire of sacred music for organ/keyboard.

  5. Accompanying vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles in worship (especially in summer months during worship).

  6. Participating in extra concerts and rehearsals as a soloist and or accompanist.

The Carillon Bell Choir Director is responsible for:

  1. Directing the Carillon choir in weekly rehearsals, late August-May (6:15-7:15 pm) as well as the youth bell choir Hallelujah Ringers Sundays (12:15-12:45 pm).

  2. Directing the Carillon choir in worship approximately one Sunday a month depending upon the schedules of its members, as well as Hallelujah Ringers at least one Sunday every 2 months.

  3. Collaborating with the Music Director in scheduling and planning ahead for worship to make sure all ensembles have a place.

  4. Selecting music from the repertoire of sacred bell music appropriate to the liturgical season and/or texts insofar as possible.

  5. Provide instruction and training to the Carillon choir/Hallelujah Ringers members in proper bell playing techniques as well as assisting them with arrangements or highlighting music when needed.

The Associate Music Director is also responsible for directing the Atonement Orchestra quarterly with two rehearsals prior to that Sunday. The Music Director does all of the scheduling/admin work, the Associate Music Director will help with choosing music from our library and conducting (it is a small orchestra and simple music is the goal).

The Associate Music Director reports to the Music Director. They are a member of the Worship Ministry Team and are asked to participate in the activities of the Ministry Team which include the planning of seasonal worship liturgies and musical selections.

Regular worship services at which the Associate Music Director participates include: one service each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.; Wednesday evening services during Advent and Lent; Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening services during Holy Week; two services on Easter Sunday; three services on Christmas Eve. There may be other special congregational events in which the Associate Music Director is requested to participate.

Education: A degree in music is preferred.

Experience: Previous experience as a church musician is preferred.

Compensation: Salary range: $12,000 to $14,000 per year, negotiable with experience. Pro-rated benefits provided. Two-weeks paid vacation yearly for first four years. Shared office space as desired. Budget line item for scores and music. Extra compensation, as arranged for weddings and funerals. Use of church instruments and facilities for student instruction.
